History and formationMade in several phases beginning in 1861, the model of Pompeii was dismantled and moved on several occasions before finding its current position in the museum following the Second World War. ItineraryThe model of Pompeii, on display in room XCVI on the first floor of the museum, represents a 1:100 scale model of the Vesuvian city showing the buildings and their decoration. In some ways, it represents the only surviving evidence of areas which were damaged by the effects of time and weathering, or which disappeared during the war. The only parts of the city that are missing from the reproduction, which measures 8 x 5 m., are the amphitheatre, the Insula occidentalis and the Insula 2 of regio VIII, as well as the evidence that has come to light during the excavations carried out in recent decades. The large model was designed on the initiative of Giuseppe Fiorelli,while the actual construction work was done by Felice Padiglione.
